I perfectly understand the panic that could follow the moment your traffic goes from hundreds/thousands a day to just double digits. In my early days of Pinterest marketing, I was always it was a problem and in some cases I even abandoned some sites and accounts because of that. In hindsight, those were terrible decisions.

And that is why I want to guide with this blog post on exactly what to do, and not be like my former self that abandoned accounts and sites because of a Pinterest algo change.

As you already know, Pinterest is a search engine and search engines are powered by algorithms(algo) that decide what content to show when a user searches for something on Pinterest. Something you might not know is that sometimes, these algos undergo updates that affects your ability to show up when users search. Sometimes the effect is positive, other times it is not. For the sake of this blog post, I would assume you happened to be one of those it affected negatively, and as a result you traffic went down.

The first thing to do is to not panic. Some people panic and start posting much more pins than before thinking it’ll help, no it won’t.

Pinterest Analytics And KeywordToPin’s Competition Analysis Tool

The next thing to do is, check your analytics on Pinterest to see those pins that were driving clicks and traffic, check to be sure they were not removed. If they’re not removed, take note of the target keyword for those pins. You want to use KeywordToPin’s Competition Analysis tool to understand the new competition for that keyword. Go to the Competition Analysis tool and enter the target keyword of that pin, wait for it to produce a result, you’ll see what kind of pin designs Pinterest is currently ranking for that keyword. If there’s a drastic change in the pin designs compared to what you had, then there’s your sign that you need to create new content/pin for that keyword. Usually this is the case for most people. Although for a very select few, it is isn’t, Pinterest just chose to rank different group of pins.

Do the above for everyone of your pin that was bringing in traffic and suddenly lost it, that way you should be able to notice a pattern in what Pinterest is showing users versus what you currently have. But whatever you do, don’t delete the pins. Never. If there’s anything I’ve learnt, it is that Pinterest routinely goes back to old pins to rank some of them.

Research And Cover More Keywords

Another thing to do is research and cover new keywords. The reason this is important is that, even though Pinterest might not be ranking your old pins anymore, you’re not prevented from having your new pins ranked and recommended. Plus, you need to keep your account fresh with new content ideas. If you’ve lost ideas on what to cover, use the ‘Explore Topics’ tool on KeywordToPin, to get new ideas. Go to the tool, click on the ‘Niche Category’ dropdown list, and choose your niche, you’ll be given ideas that pertains to your niche. But don’t stop there, use the ‘keyword’ filter option to enter a seed word for the tool to bring topic ideas that only relates to. Once you have these topic ideas. Take them to the main Keyword Research tool on KeywordToPin, to see the potential search volume and everything else that matters. This way you’ll always have an endless supply of fresh content to cover.

Reduce Daily Posting Count

Finally, the last thing I do and also recommend to others that experience an algorithmic change in traffic, is to slow down the number of pins posted per day. If you were posting too many, slow down to a lesser number and study the competition first. That way, you don’t keep flooding your account with the same type of pins that aren’t ranking or getting recommended.

In Summary, these are the steps:

Get a list of your previously ranking pins.

Use the target keywords of those pins to study the current competition & understand what Pinterest is currently ranking that doesn’t include your pins.

Create new pins for those keywords with the new pin designs(including title & description)

Research for new keywords and create new content & pins for them.

Slow down the number of pins you were posting, to not flood your account with pins that aren’t ranking.

What Do You Do When Your Pinterest Traffic Drops?
